Fox Glacier

My scheduled Helihike at 12pm was cancelled due to bad weather. I was told to return to their office at 3pm to get on that one. It was cancelled too :(. It took quick thinking on my part to see if I could get on another type of tour. My luck was in and there was one leaving in five minutes. It was the last walk of the day. I wasn’t going all that way and not seeing the ice. The rain wouldn’t stop me. It was totally miserable. We got kitted out in full waterproofs. It was a 4 hour hike, firstly through rainforest (600 steps) to reach the side of the glacier. We put on our crampons and took a walking stick (for balance and for picking at the ice). We walked about the ice for about an hour or so. The rain never let up and the visibility was quite bad.  We saw an ice cave and a hole in the ice (name escapes me) that is estimated to be 150 meters deep. Seeing the glacier was amazing, walking on it was ever better.  On the way back we trecked the same path as getting to the glacier. We had crossed a few water falls on the way. The worst one on the way there was over the toe of my boots and about 5 meters across. With the hours of rain in between the waterfall had swelled substaintally. It had swelled so much that it took three guides to get us across it one by one. The water was up to my knees and the force of the water was something else. It was too scary for my liking, I was so glad when I reached the other side. We arrived back to the guide’s office looking like drowned rats. My boots were completely full of water. I felt exhilerated though, I almost ran back to the hostel I was so happy to have done the walk. It was a quick shower and off to the pub for some beer and a lovely burger. Not very many photos taken at all, the rain was too bad and I needed my arms to balance on the ice.
